Thomas Veail Cutright was born in Chillicothe, Ohio 20 Jan 1815, the son of Nathaniel Cutright of Fayette County, Kentucky and Margaret Veail of Botetourt County, Virginia. He lived in Chillicothe for his first 19 years, then moved with his parents and four brothers, John, RV, George, and James to Fayette County, Ohio in 1834 where he learned cabinet making. He also read law with Judge A S Dickie. He built cabinets in Detroit, Michigan and Brownsville, Texas, while continuing to read law. The State of Texas admitted him to the bar in Fall 1837. He served as a Texas attorney for ten years, but wanted to make a change and settled in Chillicothe, Illinois in 1847 where he worked as a cabinet-maker and attorney. The State of Illinois accepted him to the bar in 1865 after which he devoted his life to law. He served as Justice of the Peace in Peoria County, then after 27 years moved to the county seat, Peoria, where he was employed as City Attorney. After a successful period, he returned to private practice, working until just three years before his death in 22 April 1898.
Cutright married three times. Miss Maria Rowen of Ohio accepted his proposal in July 1841, bearing him one child, LeGrand B Cutright (about 1842). Thomas and Maria divorced in Oct 1849. He wedded Ms Mary A Stewart Moffitt from Ireland in Oct 1849 and raised Nathaniel S (1850), James M (1853), and John W (1855) along with Mary's four children from a previous marriage. Unfortunately, Mary died in 1859. Thomas married another Irishwoman from County Wicklow, Anna Collins, in Apr 1861 to whom Theodore (about 1863), Alice (about 1867), Louis (1870), and one more child were born.
