Julius (Slim) Goergen, 82, of LeMars, and a former Remsen resident, died Thursday, Oct. 27, 1994 at Floyd Valley Hospital in LeMars after a brief illness.
Funeral services were at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Oct. 31 at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Remsen, with his son, Rev. Donald J. Goergen, O.P., Rev. John J. McGuirk of Remsen, Rev. Dale George of LeMars and Rev. Stan Drongowski, O.P., of St. Louis, Mo., concelebrating. Burial was in the parish cemetery.
Mr. Goergen was born July 18, 1912 at rural Granville, the son of Dominick and Catherine (Meyer) Goergen. He was raised and educated in the Granville area.
He worked as a farm laborer prior to his marriage to Sylvia Wilhelmi on March 30, 1937 at Remsen. The couple farmed briefly in the Jackson, Nebr. area before moving to Remsen. They farmed until retiring to Remsen in 1976. The couple moved to LeMars in November 1989. Mrs. Goergen died March 21, 1992. Mr. Goergen had been a resident of Plymouth Manor Care Center in LeMars since Nov. 13, 1993.
Mr. Goergen was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Remsen prior to moving to LeMars, where he was currently a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church.
Surviving are two daughters, Janet Haack and Mrs. Wayne (Judy) Wittkop of LeMars; one son, Rev. Donald J. Goergen, O.P. of Chicago, Ill.; five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; two brothers, Louis Goergen of Remsen and Edward Goergen of Lebanon, Ore.; and one sister, Mrs. Joseph (Justina) Schuetz of Sioux City.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one grandson, Rick Haack; one brother, Hubert in infancy; and three sisters, Bathilda in infancy, Mrs. Gregor (Melinda) Schemmel and Mrs. Frank (Genoveva) Diederich.
Casket bearers were Dan Coon, Dennis Goergen, Jerry Meyer, Rich Petersen, Larry Schuetz and Russ Wittkop.
