Lillian "(Otilia, Tillie)" Sobtzak Gallagher
Birth: Jan. 21, 1899
Saint Paul
Ramsey County
Minnesota, USA
Death: Jun. 30, 1937
Hennepin County
Minnesota, USA

My maternal grandmother was born in St Paul, MN to Stephen and Pauline Sobtzak. She was baptized Otilia Sobtzak and was 4th of eight children that lived. I've since learned that her mother gave birth twelve times, so four of her siblings died at some point.

By the age of six Otilia's family was living on the family farm in Polonia Township, Roseau County, MN. See more about the farm under her parent's memorials. At the young age of 16 she married Stanley "Sam" Urbanski. The marriage certificate lists her name as Telly which give a clue on the pronunciation of Otilia.

She and Sam had two sons, Leonard in 1917 and Robert in 1919. In 1920 they were living in St Cloud MN. Sam was hospitalized for TB in April 1920 and died that September. His death certificate lists his wife as Tilly. She was a widow with two young boys at the age of 21.

Between September 1920 and February 1925 Tilly disappears from records, reappearing Milwaukee WI as Lillian Ervin, the name listed on her marriage certificate to my grandfather, Fred A Gallagher. The name of her deceased husband is listed as Sam Ervin.

She gave birth to my uncle in October 1925 and the 1930 census shows this family living in Minneapolis MN. In 1931 their daughter Shirley was born, and by this time my grandmother must have had TB herself. Shirley died from Tuberculous meningitis in 1933. At the time of her death my grandmother was pregnant with my mother who was born later that year. Two months later Lillian was admitted to Glen Lake Sanitarium where she spent the next 3 yrs, 10 mos, 26 days.

She died on June 30th 1937, cause of death was listed in her death certificate as acute peritonitis, appendicitis, acute, perforated. Contributory cause: Tuberculous, pulmonary, quiescent 4 yrs. She died of a ruptured appendix that was operated on too late. Her funeral was held at St Albert the Great church in Minneapolis on July 3, 1937 with burial at St Mary's Cemetery in Minneapolis.

From records and research I have learned that my grandmother was a daughter, sister, aunt, wife (twice), mother of five, waitress and a cook. There is so much we don't know about her though, except that she died too soon and I know is still missed by those she left behind.
