Shelby Jean Karns, 68, Hopewell, died Monday, October 24, 2011, with her family by her side after a lengthy hospital stay following surgery at Altoona Hospital.
She was born January 13, 1943, in Great Mills, Md., a daughter of the late Thomas G. and Irene R. (Helsel) Reed.
On March 26, 1962, she married Ray A. Karns.
Along with her husband she is survived by daughter Stephanie, married to Jody Veach, Hopewell; granddaughter Brittany Irene Veach; two nephews who were like grandsons: Matthew and Andrew Shaffron; sisters Betty Zellers, wife of the late Charles Zellers, Wells Tannery; Mona Rice, married to Roger Rice, Everett; and Beverly, married to William Shaffron, Everett; and brothers John Reed, married to Connie (Reyan), Hopewell; William Reed, husband of the late Constance (Ford), Hopewell.
She was preceded in death by brothers Wayne and Jay D. Reed; and sisters Gloria Reed and Shirley Reed.
She grew up having attended Grace Brethren Church.
She was employed at Kountry Kettle Restaurant, where she did the baking for many eyars.
She was known for her gardening, baking and cooking skills. She cherished the time she spent with her family and was an avid bingo player. She lived a full and happy life. She will be deeply missed by friends and family far and near. A helping hand was never far away.
Funeral services were held Friday, October 28, at 11 a.m., in the chapel at Akers Funeral Home. Pastor Mark Lingenfelter officiated. Onlince condolences at www.akersfuneralhome.com.
Burial was made at Yellow Creek Reformed Cemetery.
