Norman Charles Bawkon, 71, of Shelby Township, died Thursday, Dec. 7, 2006, in Shelby Township. He was born Dec. 27, 1934, in Detroit.
Mr. Bawkon retired in 1987 after 23 years of employment as a firefighter for the Shelby Township Fire Department and was a member of Shelby Township Firefighters Local 1338.
He also served for many years as chairman of the Shelby Township Historical Committee. Under his chairmanship, the committee relocated the historic Hope Chapel to the grounds of the municipal complex and helped obtain an official historical marker for River Bends Park where a Nike missile base and a stop on the Underground Railroad once were located.
He also was a member of St. Kieran Catholic Church.
Mr. Bawkon is survived by his daughter, Mary Catherine (Ernie) Escontrias; sister, Eunice (Jerry) Nowinski; and granddaughter, Kaitlynn Katy.
He was predeceased by his wife, Anna Marie, on April 6, 2003; and parents, Stephen and Helen Bawkon.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Gramer Funeral Home, Diener Chapel, 48271 Van Dyke (south of 22 Mile Road), Shelby Township. Burial will be in Christian Memorial Cemetery, Rochester Hills.
