Funeral service for Mr. Veston Larkus Peters, 88, of Alexander City, will be Monday, March 25, 2013 at 11:00 am at the Chapel of Radney Funeral Home. Rev. Stephen Webb and Rev. George Stewart will officiate. Burial will follow in the Alexander City Cemetery with Veteran's Honors provided by the Alexander City Veteran's Honor Guard. The Tallapoosa County Sheriff's Office will serve as pallbearers. The family will receive friends on Sunday, March 24, 2013 from 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm at Radney Funeral Home.
Mr. Peters passed away on Friday, March 22, 2013 at Bill Nichols State Veterans Home. He was born on July 1, 1924 in Hackneyville, Alabama to Willie Avery Peters and Maggie Estelle Peppers Peters. He was an active member of Orr Street Baptist Church and held several offices in the Church over the years.
Mr. Peters was a U.S. Army Veteran of World War II. He was a POW in Germany for three and one half months, received the Purple Heart, Indian Bronze Arrowhead, and the Bronze Star. He was a part of the D-Day Invasion and the Battle of the Bulge.
Following the war, Mr. Peters worked at the Russell Corp. Later he served as a Deputy Sheriff in Coosa County. He was appointed Sheriff by then Governor George Wallace. After his term as Sheriff, he served as Chief Deputy in Tallapoosa County and retired with the rank of Lieutenant Investigator. Mr. Peters enjoyed traveling, gardening, and Alabama football. He was a genuinely good husband, father, and grandfather. He was known for his dry sense of humor and ability to make others laugh.
He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Mavis T. Stroud Peters of Alexander City; sons, Danny V. Peters (Grethel) and Randall G. Peters both of Alexander City; daughters, Carolyn Hubbard of Chelsea and Kim Peters of Cary, NC; 10 Grandchildren; 11 Great-Grandchildren: and niece, Needra McDaniel (Marvin) of Daviston.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Thurston Peters; and great grandchild, Brooklee Entrekin.
