John Carr was born either in Huron or Columbiana County, Ohio (both reported), the son of Thomas & Phoebe Carr. In 1860, he was, according to his military records, living in Petersburg, Menard County, Illinois, and stood 5' 4" tall with black hair and black eyes. I did not find him in the census.
He enlisted in Springfield, Sangamon County, Illinois, February 17, 1865, mustered into federal service that day as a private with Co. F, 106th Illinois Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company July 12, 1865.
He married Indiana-born Louisa Banta June 20, 1869, in Iowa and afterward lived in Pottawattamie County. Their children were Margaret Matilda (b. 10/23/70), Ernest Walter (b. 10/06/72), Rufus T. (b. 07/??/75), Amanda Eva (b. 07/26/77), David Garfield (b. 09/20/81), and Bertha (b. @1885). By no later than 1900, he was a resident of Steelton, Dauphin County, where he eventually died.
