Abraham Y. Knisley was born March 23, 1843, in Andersontown, York County, (as they added, "in the sign of the goat"), the son of Peter S. & Matilda Knisley. In 1860, he was a blacksmith living in Mechanicsburg, Cumberland County, and stood 5' 9" tall with dark hair and blue eyes.
A Civil War veteran, he first served with Co. C, 16th Pa Inf, April 20 - July 27, 1861 (or so he claimed in his pension; his name is not on the roster nor is it on the roster of the 16th Pennsylvania Militia). He also enlisted in Harrisburg August 30, 1864, and mustered there August 31 as a private with Co. D, 202nd Pennsylvania Infantry. He was promoted to sergeant September 2, 1864, but reduced to ranks ten days later. Honorably discharged with his company August 3, 1865.
He married Barbara A. Grable September 28, 1865, in Mechanicsburg, Cumberland County, and fathered John P. (b. 08/14/66), Nora E. (b. 12/26/68), Annie M. (b. 02/26/71), Edith L. (b. 10/09/73), and Jennie S. (b. 06/25/75). In 1871, he moved his family to Steelton, Dauphin County.
