Philip Dietrich Beidel was born August 23, 1842, the son of John & Maria Barbara Staerger Beidel. He moved to Illinois c. 1859 where allegedly he worked for Abraham Lincoln's cousin J. H. Simpson (I can find no such relative but have not performed an exhaustive study of Lincoln's and Mary Todd's genealogies) and often met with the future president, a story that should be viewed cautiously. He did, without question, marry Eveline "Emma" Barrick October 11, 1866. Emma died in 1906, and he married Mary C. Snyder February 12, 1912, in Hagerstown, Washington County, Maryland.
The newspaper article mentioned above bragged how he served three enlistments and spent five years in the army. That is almost true, but his military career was not spotless. The three enlistments were:
Co. I, 9th Pa Cav (92nd Pa) - enlisted in Chambersburg September 30, 1861, as "Philip Beitler" and deserted January 18, 1862
Co. G, 126th Pa Inf - enlisted in Chambersburg under his proper name August 4, 1862, promoted to corporal, and honorably discharged May 20, 1863
Battery B, 2nd Pa Art (112th Pa) - enlisted in Washington DC August 1, 1863, promoted to corporal, and honorably discharged January 29, 1866
He also alleged that, while marching in review during the war with the president in attendance, he stepped from ranks to say "hi" to Lincoln, who recognized him and shook his hand. That is another tale that should be taken with a grain of salt.
