Obit: John R. Platt, 61, of Clifton Park, died on Thursday, September 16, 2004 at his home. He was born on May 9, 1943 in Youngstown, Ohio, the son of the late Richard and Eugenia Baker Platt.
He graduated from Kent State University in 1965. He was the executive director of EZ Pass Interagency Group and prior to that he was executive director of the New York State Thruway from 1996 until 2003. Mr. Platt actively served on various National Boards and commissions including chairman of the EZ Pass Interagency Group, board of directors of ITS America, and chairman of the I-95 Corridor Coalition. John was a Eucharistic minister and communicant at St. Edward the Confessor Church in Clifton Park, NY.
Funeral will be held Saturday morning at 10 a.m. at St. Edward the Confessor Church where a Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated. Calling hours will be from 4-8 p.m. Friday at the Gordon C. Emerick Funeral Home 1550 Rt. 9 in Clifton Park. Interment will be in Sunset Hills Cemetery, Canton, Ohio on Wednesday.
Added to obit: During summer college breaks, John worked for Mahoning County Transportation. After graduation, he worked at Stark County Area Transportation Study (SCATS) in Canton. He headed up the Canton City Community Development Department under Mayor Stanley Cmich.
He worked a year and a half with a private consulting firm in Cleveland, before starting his own company. Community Development Planners was headquartered in Massillon and doing work in OH, PA, VA, and MI for 15 years. He worked as Assistant Director of Transportation Modes (air, rail, water and bikeways) for the Ohio Dept of Transportation. Later he was promoted to Chief of Staff for ODOT. He moved to New York and was Executive Director for the New York State Thruway and Canals for 6 1/2 years. He directed the EZ Pass Interagency Group until his death.
