Lee appears to be the son of Franklin Clayton Triplett and unknown mother. He was born in July 1867, the same month his father married Martha Ann Taylor. It may be that Lee's mother died in childbirth and his father immediately remarried. Or it may be that his parents married at the time of his birth. At any rate his parents then moved on to Catawba county and left Lee with his paternal grandparents. It appears that Lee's father was the only child of his parents.

Lee is a brother to Rose Etta, Ida Triplett Bostian, Henry Ross, Marvin Wesley and John F Triplett. 3 of his siblings died before 1900 as did his father.

Rose Etta, like their father, was listed in the 1880 census as maimed, crippled or bedridden. Their father had served in 1863-1864 as a private in the NC 1st cavalry, Co D. By 1880 he was a prisoner in the jail of Catawba county.

The 1900 census of Blue Ridge, Watauga county shows Lee living with his paternal grandfather, Joel Triplett. The 1870 census had shown him, at age 2, living with his grandparents, Joel and Milly. The 1880 census shows him with his grandparents and listed as Robert.
