Cheryl was born in Fort Benning, Georgia, to Henry Lee and Bobbie Ruth Coleman Lewis. She married Joe Edward Smith 20 Dec 1962 in Colorado City, Texas, and together they had four children: Joe Todd in 1963, David Dean in 1966, Ned Edward (Eddie) in 1970, and Amy Lynn in 1972.
Technically, Joe is my cousin, but because I was born the same year as their youngest, I have always called them Uncle Joe and Aunt Cheryl. Cheryl was just a lovely person and a joy to know. She was genuinely kind, generous and supportive. She devoted her life to her family and loved without limit. She and her beloved Joe were happily married for just shy of 39 years.
Cheryl began getting horrible headaches that would literally blacken one or both eyes. This was the first in a long line of symptoms of a long-undiagnosed illness. I know she discussed it with Uncle Joe and others, but she never wanted to burden the family. Through her suffering, she never complained when we were all together, and she was never without a smile and a hug. Aunt Cheryl was an inspiration. I only wish we could have helped her figure out that all along it was Lyme Disease that was robbing her of the life she deserved. She finally succumbed at the age of 54 - far too young, but I think I speak for everyone who knew her that we were lucky to have been touched by her beauty as long as we were.
