James Aspelin Dies

James Nels Aspelin, 77, a Dwight native and former longtime businessman there, died Monday, Feb. 28, 2000, at a Manhattan nursing home.

On Oct. 5, 1922, he was born, in Dwight, to Albert and Dagny Elizabeth Nicholson (Nikolajsen) Aspelin. His father was a second-generation Swedish emigrant, and his mother was a first-generation Danish emigrant. In 1890, four-year-old Dagny, her parents, and her siblings immigrated to America.

Mr. Aspelin grew up in the Dwight area. In 1941, he graduated from the Dwight Rural High School.

Soon after World War II began, James enlisted in the US Navy. Following his training session at the Navy s Great Lakes, Ill., station, he was assigned to the USS Essex, CV-9, which was an aircraft carrier that operated in the Pacific Theater. He served in the navy from July 24, 1942, to Dec. 19, 1945.

The USS Essex participated in many of the war's notable sea battles. During James' time aboard the ship, its engagements included raids on Marcus, Turk, and Guam Islands. Perhaps his and the Essex's most harrowing experience was the 1944 Japanese Kamikaze attack upon it, which occurred near Luzon, Philippines. The ship caught fire, was rocked with fuel and munitions' explosions, and its crew was ordered to prepare to abandon ship. Fortunately, the fire was brought under control and the vessel was saved.

In 1946, James entered Kansas State College, Manhattan. He attended it for a year. He then moved to Wichita and worked in a variety of jobs.

In 1948, he returned to Dwight and entered a business partnership with his sister, Ruth. Since 1944, she had owned/operated the town's Aspelin's IGA grocery.

On Aug. 7, 1949, James married Lorraine A. Gleason, at Council Grove's First United Methodist Church. She survives.

In 1958, James and Lorraine bought Ruth's interest in the grocery store. They then jointly operated it until their 1988 retirement.

Mr. Aspelin was involved in several social and public activities in Dwight and Morris County. He was a lifelong member of the Dwight Presbyterian Church, and a 50-year member of the Dwight American Legion Post. In 1951, he served as Dwight's mayor. In 1988, following his retirement, he unsuccessfully ran for a Morris County commissioner position.

Besides James' widow, his other survivors include a son, David Aspelin, Dwight; two daughters, Nyla ----, Kansas City, Mo., and Jamye ----, Kansas City, Kan.; six grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren. Among his siblings, one brother, Edward Aspelin, Dwight, and four sisters, Ruth Reid, Dwight, Rosalie Myrtle, Wichita, Norma Wendt, Chicago, and Georgia Kessler, Salt Lake City, also survive.

Graveside services for the cremated remains will be at 2:00 p.m. Friday, March 3, at the Dwight Cemetery. Memorial contributions, for the American Parkinson's Disease Association, may be made to the Kendall Funeral Chapel, Council Grove.
