David E. Gardner, 46, died at 7:54 a.m. Aug. 4, 2010, at St. Rita's Medical Center, following a more than three-year battle with cancer.

He was born May 24, 1964, in Shelby County to James Edward and Mary Rae Barlow Gardner, who survive in Jacksonville, Fla. On Sept. 1, 1990, he married Barbara A. Elliott, who survives in Wapakoneta.

Mr. Gardner retired from the Navy in 2001. He was a 1982 graduate of Wapakoneta Senior High School and was pursuing a degree in secondary education at OSU-Lima. He was planning to be a football coach and teacher. Football was his passion and he volunteered as a football coach in Memphis, Tenn., inner city school, Pensacola Catholic and Wapakoneta Middle School for two years. He was a football referee and officiated many games in the area. He enjoyed gourmet cooking, designing and baking cakes, disc golf and spending time with his family, especially his children. He was an avid fan of the Cincinnati Bengals.

Survivors also include three children, Maggie Gardner, Benjamin Gardner and Nicholas Gardner, all at home; three siblings, Jimmy Gardner, of Wapakoneta, Teresa (Alan) Gardner-Handley, of Clearwater, Fla., and Eric (Lara) Gardner, of Baton-Rouge, La.; a half sister, Kathy (Travis) Temple, of Celina; maternal grandmother, Evelyn Barlow, of Wapakoneta; six brothers- and sisters-in-law, Dennis (Maryann) Elliott, of Columbus, John (Marcia) Elliott, of Shawnee, Jerry Price, of Celina, Susie Elliott and Mike (Pam) Elliott, both of Wapakoneta, and Pat (Paula) Elliott, of New Bremen; and several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews great-nieces and great-nephews.

He was preceded in death by an infant brother, Paul Gardner; an infant sister, Margaret Gardner; and a sister-in-law, Cathy Elliott Price.

Services will begin at 2:30 p.m. Sunday at Bayliff & Eley Funeral Home, Wapakoneta, with military rites by Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8445. Pastor Greg Roberts will officiate.

Cremated, Ashes scattered at sea.
Specifically: us navy will scatter near turkey.
