One of at least six children of Susan Gilbert and Green L. Nelson, both of North Carolina. Her siblings included: James M., Louisa E., Melinda Caroline, Zachary Taylor, Salina Malinda, Green, and John M. In 1850, her mother and older siblings were living in Fayette County, Georgia. The household included: Susan Nelson, age 33, born in North Carolina; James M., age 12, born in Georgia; Louisa E, age 9, born in Georgia; Zachary J., age 6, born in Georgia; Malinda, age 4, born in Georgia; and Green, age 2, born in Georgia.

In 1860, the family was living in Wayne County, Kentucky. Her brother James had married and headed up a household for his wife Margaret and his brother Green. Mary was living next door in a household comprised of: Mira Nelson, age 45, spinster, born in North Carolina; Salena M, age 15, born in Georgia; Mary, age 8, born in Kentucky; John, age 4, born in Kentucky, Louisa, age 19, a domestic, born in Kentucky, and Zach Taylor, age 16, born in Georgia.

By 1870, Mary had married John Haynes and they were living with her sister Louisa and her husband in Mullentown, Kentucky (Wayne County). The household, all born in Kentucky, included: Charles Brown, age 42; Louisa Brown, age 28; John Dabney, age 10; John Haynes, age 20; and Mary Haynes, age 17.

By 1880, Mary and John were still living in Mullentown, Kentucky (Wayne County) where most of her siblings were living. Mary's household included: John Haynes, age 30; Mary N, age 29, born in KY; John W., age 4, born in Kentucky; Charles Lee, age 2, born in Kentucky; and Philipena, age 7/12, born in November in Kentucky. They were living next door to her brother John N. Nelson, his wife Rosey B., and their son Joseph B. They lived next to their brother Zachary T. Nelson, his wife Victoria, and their children.

In 1900, Mary and her family were renting a farm in Fannin County, Texas. The census incorrectly stated that all were born in Texas of Texas parents. The household included: John, age 45, born May 1855, married 20 years; Mary, age 48, born August 1851, married 20 years, eight living children of ten born; Louize, age 15, born March 1885; Fannie, age 12, born October 1887; Leona, age 10, born November 1889; Eliza, age 8, born October 1897; and Myrtle, age 4, born June 1895.

By 1910, Mary was widowed and renting a farm in Lexington, Oklahoma (Cleveland County). John had died in Fannin County, Texas in 1904. Mary's 1910 household included: Mary, age 56, born Kentucky of Georgia parents, seven living of 11 children; Fannie T., age 20, born in Texas of Kentucky parents; Susan N., age 18, born in Texas; Myrtle M., age 14, born in Texas; and Lute McGill, a servant.

In 1920, Mary was still renting a farm in Lexington. She, three of her daughters, Fannie, Leona, and Myrtle, and a cousin, Walter Haynes were working the farm. Two years later, Fannie died and was buried in Lexington Cemetery. In 1925, Myrtle married Walter Southwood.

By 1930, Mary had moved to Oklahoma City and was living with her daughter Myrtle and her husband Walter Southwood. The household included: Walter, age 35, married at age 30, born in Texas of Kentucky parents, working as an iron worker in a foundry; Myrtle, age 29, married at age 24, born in Texas of Kentucky parents, working as a saleslady in dry goods; Ola Howard, age 18, sister-in-law, born in Oklahoma of Kentucky parents; Wineford Howard, age 5, brother-in-law, born in Oklahoma of Kentucky parents; Mary Howard, age 12, born in Oklahoma of Kentucky parents; and Mary Haynes, age 77, widowed, mother-in-law, married at age 24, born in Oklahoma, with a father born in Georgia and a mother in North Carolina.
