From HISTORY OF THE PAN-HANDLE, West Virginia, 1879, by J. H. Newton, G. G. Nichols, and A. G. Sprankle. Page 259-260

. . . Dr. Archibald S. Todd, at present writing one of the oldest residents in Wheeling, who has almost immortalized the family name by the discovery of that famous household medicine so popular as Todd's Liver Pills, probably the finest family cathartic ever submitted to the public. The Doctor took his early education in private schools in Washington county, New York, and early applied himself to the study of medicine, being considerably read when he came to Wheeling in 1819, to sojourn with his brother Dr. Martin L. Todd, who had then been in practice here some twelve years, and remained so, altogether, over thirty years. Dr. A. S. Todd, the chief subject of our sketch, continued reading and assisting in the practice of medicine with his brother, in Wheeling, for five years, when he visited Transylvania University, Lexington, Kentucky, to complete his studies, and there secured a membership in 1826. He afterwards returned to Wheeling, continued with his brother in the practice of medicine, and subsequently marrying his brother's wife's sister. Dr. Martin L. Todd resigned the entire practice to him, which he continued thereafter so long as his strength permitted. His famous cathartic pills established themselves a reputation nearly half a century ago. The Doctor has always been a popular citizen, served in several local public offices, and ever exhibited a warm interest in our city's prosperity. As we have already stated, by his second marriage he had quite a family. His first child was Caroline Louisa, born April 12th, 1832, who was married March 1st, 1853, to Dr. J. C. Hupp, of this city - see biography elsewhere. The second child was Leonidas P., born May 27th, 1834, and died in infancy. Amanda Virginia, born July 23rd, 1835, died in 1555. Martin Luther Todd, born January 9th, 1840, became a divine in the Presbyterian church, and married a daughter of Dr. Shepherd, of Lexington, Kentucky, but died August 14th, 1870. Mary Ellen was born August 15th, 1844, and October 17th, 1867, married Dr. Thomas Lunsford, of Wheeling, whose biography appears elsewhere, and Ann Augusta, born July 12th, 1848, died December 1868, aged twenty years.
