TSGT Brooks retired after serving 23 years in the United States Air Force first in the Air Force Personnel Center and later as a Logistical Support Manager. While in the military, some of his overseas tours included Japan, Korea, Vietnam, and Thailand. After his overseas tours, he returned to the United States and was stationed at Peterson Field, AFB in Colorado Springs, Colorado. He then went on to finish his career at Davis-Monthan AFB in Tucson, Arizona.
After his retirement, he accepted a position at Gates Lear Jet and later obtained a position in Logistics at Davis-Monthan AFB. He went on to receive numerous awards, including the Tactical Air Command's Professional Provider of the Year award for his outstanding job performance. In addition, he received the Air Force Good Conduct Medal, Air Force Longevity Service Award, Air Force Vietnam Service Medal, Air Force Commendation Medal, National Defense Service Medal, and the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal.
In 1996, he and his wife, Lillian, moved to Columbia, SC where he ran a consignment shop for many years in Camden. He had an enormous passion for golf and was a member of the Woodlands Golf & Country Club. For years, he volunteered as a tournament marshal for the Wells Fargo Championship Golf Tournament at Quail Hollow in Charlotte, NC. He was a member of the Western States Golf Association, orchestrating and actively participating in many, many tournaments throughout the years. He was an avid sports fan who loved all sports. He also loved to fish, collect antiques and spend time in his vegetable garden.
He was predeceased by three siblings, Vincent Southerland, Jr., Cheryl Southerland and Roland Southerland.
He leaves to cherish his memory his loving wife, Lillian Brooks; seven children, Deborah Brooks of Massachusetts, Wanda Turner of South Carolina, Milton White of Nevada, Joseph (Renee) Brooks of Maryland, Doreen (Tyrone) Settles of South Carolina, Christl King (Danny) of South Carolina, and Karen Rogers of South Carolina; seven siblings, Duke (Gilda) Connecticut, Allyn Southerland of Massachusetts, Gene Southerland of Colorado, Robert Southerland of Virginia, Yvonne Foster of Connecticut, Lynne Southerland of Connecticut, Debra Southerland of Connecticut; thirteen grandchildren; five great grandchildren; a host of nieces and nephews who will miss him dearly.
