James was a native of Lancaster County & moved to Kosciusko County, Indiana in the 1830's, where he married Mary Baker on Oct 28, 1838. He engaged in farming for several years & had seven children born in Kosciusko County; John N. (b. 1841), Enoch (b. 1843), Charles (b. 1847), Elijah (b. 1849), Jemima, aka Minnie (b. 1852), Mary E. (b. 1855) & Ella (b. 1858). Sons, Elijah & Enoch both died in Kosciusko County in the spring of 1859 (Elijah in May; Enoch in June).
In 1860, he moved the family to Minnesota, where he purchased land in Winona County & continued its cultivation. Two more daughters were born in Minnesota; Olive (b. 1862) & Tena (b. 1865).
In 1870, the family went to Nebraska, settling in Saunders county, where James took up a homestead claim adjoining one owned by his son, Charles. The trip was made overland, with a team of oxen. James subsequently sold his claim, purchasing another one from William Lawson. He built a comfortable residence & devoted his remaining days to farming. He died in 1887, at the age of seventy-one years.
