He engaged in farming for several years & had seven children born in Kosciusko County; John N. (b. 1841), Enoch (b. 1843), Charles (b. 1847), Elijah (b. 1849), Jemima, aka Minnie (b. 1852), Mary E. In 1860, he moved the family to Minnesota, where he purchased land in Winona County & continued its cultivation. Two more daughters were born in Minnesota; Olive (b. 1862) & Tena (b. 1865).

In 1870, the family went to Nebraska, settling in Saunders county, where James took up a homestead claim adjoining one owned by his son, Charles. The trip was made overland, with a team of oxen. James subsequently sold his claim, purchasing another one from William Lawson. He built a comfortable residence & devoted his remaining days to farming. He died in 1887, at the age of seventy-one years.
