Tokugawa Yoshinobu
Birth: Oct. 28, 1837
Death: Jan. 22, 1913

Last Shogun of Japan. Born Tokugawa Keiki he was the last Tokugawa shogun of Japan. His resignation in 1867 as shogun, returning all power to the Emperor, helped make the Meiji Restoration, overthrow of the Tokugawa shogunate and restoration of power to the emperor, a comparatively peaceful transition. He then retired to Mito and lived quietly for the rest of his life, studying the new art of photography. Made a prince in 1902 the Meiji Emperor allowed him to reestablish his own house as a Tokugawa branch with the highest rank in the peerage, that of prince, in honor of his loyal service to Japan.  (bio by: Fred Beisser)
