Taikan Yokoyama
Birth: Sep. 18, 1868
Death: Feb. 26, 1958

Japanese-style painter. Yokoyama graduated from the painting department of the Tokyo School of Fine Arts in 1863. In 1898, he participated in the formation of the Japan Art Institute in Tokyo and came under the guidance of Tenshin Okakura. He sought to create a modern Japanese style via such works as "Eight Views of the Xiaoxiang" (1912). Another of his important works was "Lively Perpetual Motion" (1923). In 1937 he became a member of the Imperial Art Academy, and in the same year he was the first to receive the newly establsihed Order of Cultural Merit. Tokyo's Taikan Yokoyama Memorial Hall was also established in his honor. (bio by: Warrick L. Barrett)
