|Birth: ||May 8, 1922|

Richard was the son of Sallie Brackett France, and an unnamed Smith. He grew up in the France home in Fourmile, Kentucky. He was born on May 8, 1925 in Knox County, Kentucky, but lied about his age to get into the service. Sadly, he was killed in action in the European Theater at the age of just seventeen. Because the headstone is a military headstone, it shows the date of birth Richard used to enlist. There was a newspaper article written at the time of his death about Richard and his good friend, Corp. Shirley West #33484626, both young men who grew up together in Fourmile, who were killed at an early age in World War II.
