| Birth: | Oct. 30, 1830 Bowen's Creek Liberty County Georgia, USA | | Death: | Jul. 13, 1863 |  Civil War Confederate Major General. He graduated from the US Military Academy in 1856, was commission officer in the US Mounted Rifles and served on the frontier until resigning in 1856, to become an architect. When the Civil War began, he was commissioned Captain in the Missouri State Guard and quickly rose to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. After being captured at Camp Jackson and prisoner exchanged, he assumed command of the Confederate 1st Missouri Infantry as Colonel in June, 1861. In March, 1862, he was promoted to Brigadier General and commanded a brigade at the Battle of Shiloh. He distinguished himself at the Battle of Port Gibson and was promote Major General in May, 1863. He led a division at the 1863, Siege of Vicksburg, Mississippi and after suffering defeat at the Battle of Big Black River, he grew terribly ill. He surrendered when Vicksburg finally fell, was sent North as a prisoner of war and after being paroled, succumbed to dysentery. (bio by: John "J-Cat" Griffith)
