Cletus Cushman

Cletus L. Cushman, 81, Belmont, died early Tuesday morning, June 30, 1992, at Parkview Terrace Nursing Home in Platteville.

Funeral services were held Friday, July 3, at the Peace Lutheran Church in Belmont. The Rev. Richard Wolf officiated.

Burial was in the Belmont cemetery. the Mergen-Boll Funeral Home, Platteville, was in charge of arrangements. A Cletus Cushman memorial fund has been established.

Cletus L. Cushman was born in Harrison Township, Grant County, Wisconsin, on June 10, 1911, the son of Roy and Agnes Baker Cushman. He graduated from Platteville High School. On Nov. 30, 1931, he was united in marriage to the former Vera E. Nicholas. They farmed in the Platteville-Belmont area until moving to Belmont in 1951. He sold feed for Wm. Eustice and Sons. He was then employed at Knebel's Processing Plant, working as a sausage maker and meat cutter until his retirement. Mrs. Cushman died in 1987.

He was very active in the community life of the village of Belmont. He was instrumental in starting the first rescue squad for the village and served as President for many years. The first rescue squad vehicle was the Cushman family car.

A long time member of the Village Board, he served from April of 1966 until April of 1975. From April of 1975 until resigning in July of 1988 because of poor health, Cletus served as the Village Board President.

In addition he was also the Civil Defense Director of Belmont as well as serving on the Civil Defense Committee for Lafayette County. He was also a long time member of the Belmont Fire Department serving as Secretary/Treasurer. Cletus belonged to the Belmont Lions Club, the Library Board and the Belmont School Fair Board. For many years, Cletus was the announcer for both the School Fair Parade as well as the Stunt Night.

Survivers include 2 sons, Nicholas (Marilyn) Cushman, Belmont, and Jerome Cushman, Victor, NY; 2 daughters, Mrs. Cheryl (Doug) Speth, Belmont, and Connie Foley, Sun Prairie; 8 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren; and 3 sisters, Mrs. Kenneth (Genevieve) Fox, Omaha, NE, Mrs. Robert (Florence) Davies, Kings Mountain, NC, and Mrs. Ralph (Carol) Clement, Jeffersonville, IN.
