Clarence Ralph Fulford, son of Archibald Cleveland Fulford and Ruby Ethel Willard, was born in Brattleboro, Windham County, Vermont. "Clay", as he was known, enlisted in the US Army at the age of 20, eventually becoming a glider pilot and participating in the D-Day invasion at Normandy. He was also credited with the capture of at least one German soldier during the second World War.

Following his military service Clay married Beverly June Menter of Keene on the 10th of July in 1946. Together the couple had three sons.

Clay supported his family through the manufacture of wooden chair legs and bar stool legs, and built his own business – known as Fulford & Sons – in Swanzey, Cheshire County, New Hampshire. He and his sons continued to operate the business for many years, fulfilling contracts from Sprague & Carleton and various furniture makers in the Carolinas.

Clarence Fulford died in his sleep on October 13, 2004.
