Deceased Name: Devyn Lynn Farina and Bryan Gadd: Newborn orphaned by car wreck
Jacob Gadd was born an orphan.
His parents, Devyn Lynn Farina, 25, and Bryan Gadd, 35, died after their car was struck early Sunday by a pickup truck being driven by a "very impaired" driver, authorities said.
Gadd was killed instantly. Farina, who was due to give birth Monday, died in an ambulance headed for Orlando Regional Medical Center, where Jacob was born minutes later by Caesarean section.
The 8-pound, 11-ounce baby was moved to Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children & Women where he was in critical but stable condition Monday, hospital spokesman Joe Brown said. The newborn suffered no apparent injuries but was examined Monday for neurological damage.
Both sets of Jacob's grandparents were at the hospital Monday, but declined to comment.
"It's been a devastating situation for the entire family," the hospital spokesman said on behalf of the family. "There's a lot of concern for the baby and that's what they're focusing on right now."
The driver of the truck, Robert Justin Palmer, 27, was charged with two counts of DUI manslaughter and could face 30 years in prison if convicted, Florida Highway Patrol Lt. Chuck Williams said. The arrest record described him as "very impaired."
