Reverend William Henry Starr was the son of Joshua Starr and Fenton Melear. He was a Methodist Circuit Rider Minister in Alabama, as were many of my Starr Ancestors. He was originally from Henry Co., Georgia, and moved to Chambers Co., Alabama in the late 1830's. After the death of William's first wife Mahala in 1851 he married Mrs. Mary Hawkins and by 1854 he and Mary were settled in Smith Co., Texas north of Tyler on Ray Creek. William owned 1,683 acres of land when he died in 1864. He is buried in the Starr-Hawkins Cemetery, where his grandson James Alva Knowles erected a monument his honor.
