Rev. William W Chapman was a Methodist circuit rider who came to Alabama from Georgia about 1840. He had married Elizabeth Hester in 1813, and they had five children: Nancy Matilda, Thomas Richard, James S, Sarah Ann, and Owen Green. They finally settled in Dale County, Alabama, having purchased land where the Pleasant Ridge Cemetery is today.
After Elizabeth died in 1855, William married Rebeckah Ann Rhodes Lucas, widow of George W. Lucas. William and Rebeckah were married for about four years before he died, and had no children together.
Sometime after William's death in 1861, his oldest son Thomas Richard Chapman donated land for the Pleasant Ridge Cemetery, and became the first person buried there, in 1865.
