Luther S. Beers, 69, of 419 Candlewick Road, Camp Hill, Pa. died Tuesday in Polyclinic Medical Center.
He was an engineer for the Bureau of Facilities Management in the state Department of Public Welfare: a retired employee of the former Olmsted Air Force Base; and a World War II veteran.
He was a volunteer and pioneer in programs for the retarded and a founder of the first area sheltered workshop and residential group home.
He was a member of Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church; Perry Lodge #458 F&AM; Tall Cedars of Lebanon Forest #43; the Tall Cedars Band; Harrisburg Consistory; and Susquehannock United States Power Squadron. He was a charter member and past president of the Cumberland-Perry Association for Retarded Citizens; a charter member and preisdent of Parents and Friends of Retraded Citizens; and a member of the board of the Pennsylvania Association for Retarded Citizens.
Surviving are his wife, Marjorie Beers; a son, Joseph C. at home; two daughters, Phyllis M. Williams of Virginia Beach, Va., and Rebecca B. Lingenfelter of Camp Hill; two brothers, Earnest of San Luis Obispo, Calif., and Kenneth of Marysville; two sisters, Leah Long of Millersburg and Ethel Miller of York; and a granddaughter.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday in his church with the Rev. Richard L. Dowhower officiating. Burial will be in Rolling Green Memorial Park, Lower Allen Twp.
