George E. Brewer was the son of James and Delilah (possibly Simmons) Brewer. He was born about 1838 in Georgia, was a schoolteacher, and served in the Altamaha Scouts in the Civil War, ending as a 1st Lieutenant. He was captured 16 Dec 1864 in Nashville and was released from Johnson's Island POW camp in Ohio on 16 Jan. 1865.
