Sara Elizabeth Abel, 20, passed away in Austin, Texas on December 13, 2003 from injuries sustained in a one-vehicle accident on December 12, 2003. A Mass of Resurrection will celebrate Sara's life Wednesday, December 17th at 3:30 p.m. at Holy Family Catholic Church with Monsignor Fred Nawarskas officiating, directed by North's Funeral Home. Visitation will be at 6:00 p.m. Tuesday at North's Memorial Chapel, 242 Orange Street with Prayer Service beginning at 7:00 p.m.

Sara was born November 13, 1983 and was raised in Abilene where she attended AISD and graduated from Abilene High School in 2002. She was editor-in-chief of the high school newspaper "The Battery" both her junior and senior years. She was the recipient of the Bernard Hanks scholarship given by the Abilene Reporter News. She was attending St. Edwards University in Austin, Texas, majoring in writing. Sara was classified as a junior after only attending three semesters, due to her advanced placement studies while at Abilene High School. She was very involved with the honors program at St. Edwards and was on the Dean's List.

Sara was mature beyond her years and passionate about her poetry and writing. She was aware that she had a gift and used it to express her creativity. Sara was always grateful for her teachers, especially the ones who would challenge her.

She was a champion on free speech rights and the responsibilities that went with it. Her passions were diverse and included music, the beauty of nature, literature, politics, and philosophy.

Survivors include her parents, Nancy and Steve Abel; her best friend and sister Ashley Abel all from Abilene; grandmother, Amy Abel of Graham, Texas; grandmother, Hazel West of Abilene; uncle, Kevin Abel and cousins, Brittany and Aaron Abel of Abilene.

Pallbearers will be Catherine Guitar, Jordan Jones, Zack Kennedy, JudyAn Key, Chellby Powell, and Cody Stites, her friends and extended family.

In lieu of flowers, the family request that memorials be made to the Sara Abel Memorial Scholarship Fund, Community Foundation of Abilene, P.O. Box 1001, Abilene, Texas 79604.
