Birth: 1846
New York, USA
Death: Sep. 15, 1903
Bath
Steuben County
New York, USA

The son of Abraham and Hannah (Müssig) Gilcher, he was called "Abe" in his family. It was only after returning from the war and working in Syracuse that his father told him his formal name was John Abram Gilcher, so he began to go by that name then, to avoid being confused with his father. He was also listed as "Abraham Gilcher" in the 1892 census and in the city directories of Syracuse in the 1880s and 1890s.

He was a Civil War veteran: a Private in Battery G, 3rd New York Volunteers, Light Artillery, enlisted under the name of Abram Gilcher on 11 January 1864 (in Buffalo, NY or in Syracuse, NY); he was honorably discharged 7 July 1865 at Syracuse, NY.

In Syracuse after that he worked as a laborer, a peddler, a saltboiler, a brewer, and a beer-wagon driver (in the 1890s he worked for the Greenway Brewing Co.).

In his veteran's pension affidavit dated 13 November 1897, he stated his wife [Margaret, called "Maggie"] had died March 14, 1897; that it was his only marriage; and that he had no children living.

His left arm was amputated in October 1896. His last appearance in Syracuse city directories was in 1897 when he lived at 707 McBride, as did his sister Eva. After that, due to failing health, it seemed he moved to Bath, New York, most probably taking up residence in the Old Soldiers' and Sailors' Home for disabled veterans there.

Alternate death date: 14 September 1903 (per pension records)
