Marvin Dwight Winston, of Cordova, passed away June 9, after a courageous battle with an extended illness. He was preceded in death by his brother, Lowell Winston, Jr, and his parents Lowell Winston and Carrie Ingram Winston. He is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Clynese, his three daughters, Sheila Patrick and husband Louis of Memphis, Sandra Coleman and husband Rip of Niceville, Florida, and Sharon Woodman of Pacific Grove, California, and his brother Charles Winston and wife June. He is also survived by four grandchildren and six great grandchildren, whom he dearly loved. Marvin was born April 17, 1931 in Tuckerman, Arkansas. After graduating from Tech High School in Memphis in 1950, he served honorably in the United States Marine Corps during the Korean War. He then earned a Bachelor of Science Degree from Memphis State University in 1956 followed by a Law Degree from Southern University College of Law in 1964 and a Master of Science Degree from Memphis State in 1970. He was licensed to practice Law in Tennessee from 1965 and was a career employee of Memphis Light Gas and Water, where he retired as Manager of the Cash Management Department in 1996. He continued to serve on the board of retirees at MLGW for many years. He served on the board for the Salvation Army, and positively affected many young lives, as coach of the Germantown Track Club, by helping prepare young athletes for the Junior Olympics. He taught evening classes in accounting at State Technical Institute in Memphis for many years. Marvin was a greatly admired, hard-working gentleman with a good sense of humor, whose wise and helpful advice was often sought by family and friends. He had a special love for young children and will be greatly missed by many people. Visitation will be held at Memorial Park Cemetery on Saturday, June 12th, between 5:00 and 7:00 p.m. Service will be held at Memorial Park Cemetery in Memphis, TN on Sunday, June 13th 2010 at 2:00 p.m. with burial following. Memorial contributions may be sent to The Church Health Center, the Memphis Union Mission, or Le Bonheur Children's Hospital. (Published in The Commercial Appeal on June 11, 2010)
