Captain Joseph T. Schartung Jr., 49, of Decatur passed away on Tuesday, April 1, 2009. He was born June 26, 1959, in Owensboro, Ky., to Joseph Thomas Schartung Sr. and Joan Riney Schartung. Joe received his commission as an Ensign with the U.S. Naval Academy class of 1981 and his MBA from Golden Gate University in San Francisco, Calif. Joe served in the Navy for nine years (active duty) and continued in the Navy Reserves for 19 years. His most recent assignment was as the Navy Emergency Pre-paredness Liaison Officer for the state of Alabama where Joe was directly involved in coordinating Defense Department support to the Gulf Coast region on multiple occasions following Hurricanes Katrina, Rita, and most recently, Hurricane Ike.

For the last 19 years, Joe was employed by NALCO Chemical Co., most recently as District Account Manager primarily servicing BP, Solutia, Calpine, TVA Browns Ferry, Worthington Steel, Toray and Hexcel.

Joe was a devoted husband to Connie, his wife of 21 years, and loving father to Cathryn (17), Michael (14), David (11), Paul (9) and Merrilee (4). He is also survived by his parents, three sisters, Cecilia Norman (Richard) of Atlanta, Ga., Sharon Clarke (Doug) of Robbinsville, N.J., Donna Schartung of Frankfurt, Ky.; and grandmother, Mary Cecilia Schartung. Joe was preceded in death by their infant daughter, Mary Baltes Schartung.

Visitation will be held tonight, April 5, 2009, from 4 to 7 p.m. with Rosary recitation at 4:30 p.m. led by the Rev. Joel Martin, OSB. Funeral Mass will be held on Monday, April 6, 2009, at 11 a.m. officiated by the Rev. Ray Remke. All services will be held at Annunciation of the Lord Catholic Church.

Pallbearers will be members of the U.S. Navy.
In lieu of flowers, contributions are respectfully requested to the Schartung Children Education Fund c/o Annunciation of the Lord Catholic Church or donations to the Annunciation of the Lord Building Fund, 3910 Spring Avenue, Decatur, AL 35603.
