Civil War Nurse There are a few women who became famous during the Civil War for their participation with the men of combat units. Anna Etheridge was one of those She became well known in the Union army for taking care of the wounded at the Battle of Bull Run. She was given various nicknames, "Gentle Annie," Michigan Annie, the "Angel of the Third Corps," and "that brave little sergeant in petticoats." She was promoted to the rank of, a rare honor for a woman in the war, and a medal, by General Philip Kearny, himself. She went on to serve in the Battles of Gettysburg, Bloody Angle, Cold Harbor, Belle Plaine, and Hatcher's Run, invariably on the front lines, her skirt often riddled with bullets, taking care of 'her boys.' She also tended to the thousands of wounded soldiers who were transported to City Hospital following General Grant's siege on Petersburg, Virginia. At war's end, Anna married a war veteran and worked as a government clerk in Washington, D.C. She is buried in Arlington Cemetery.
