Basil was born October 24, 1910, at Harrison, Arkansas, where he was raised and educated. He married Gladys L. Summers on November 9, 1929. In 1936 they came to Meridian. Basil worked in orchards, at the Meridian Creamery, and later for Davis Food Market, where he was employed for 34 years. During retirement years, he mowed fairways at Crane Creek Country Club. His wife died in November 1997. Basil and Gladys were members of Meridian Gospel Tabernacle Church.
Basil died at a local care center of natural causes. Survivors included his two daughters and sons-in-law, seven grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren, and a great-great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Jim; and a brother, Noble.
Funeral services were held at 2 pm. Tuesday, July 14, at the Chapel of the Chimes, Meridian. Pastors Evert and Burton Roberts of Meridian Gospel Tabernacle officiated. Burial will followed in the Meridian Cemetery.
