Mr. John Benjamin Clemmons, Sr., 100, had his transition on Wednesday, June 13, 2012 at his home.
Mr. John B. Clemmons, Sr. - SAVANNAH - College professor and scholar J. B. Clemmons was born John Benjamin Clemmons on April 11, 1912, to the late Lewis and Bessie (Turner) Clemmons in Rome, Georgia. He departed this life of natural causes on June 13, 2012 , at his home. JB graduated from high school at the age of 15 in 1927. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Morehouse College and a Master of Science from Atlanta University. Additionally, he studied at the University of Pittsburg, the University of Southern California, and the University of California, Los Angeles. His academic accomplishments also include the Ford Foundation Fellowship, 1952; University of Southern California Teaching Fellowship, 1953; and the National Science Facility Fellowship, 1958. Brother Clemmons was an active member of St. Philip AME Church for over 50 years until his health began to fail.
JB was a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity and Sigma Pi Phi Fraternity (The Boule). JB has served on the national executive board of Sigma Pi Phi and was the Director of The Boule Foundation, that in his honor named its highest award for giving to the Foundation, The John B. Clemmons Award. JB served as both Director and Chairman of the Board for Carver State Bank for 49 years and as Chairman of the Department of Mathematics and Physics at Savannah State University for thirty-seven years. He was interviewed by The History Makers on January 22, 2007, and on February 28, 2009. Carver State Bank honored JB for his many years of leadership and service to the bank and the Savannah community. JB has received many honors over the years for his outstanding work and philanthropic efforts in the community. JB started the first African American Boy Scout troop in Harlan, Kentucky. He was awarded the Silver Beaver award for his contributions to Boy Scouts in Savannah.
