Robert was born Dec. 12, 1918, in Dubuque, Iowa he was the son of late Thomas J. and Iva Marie (Vollenwieder). Bob graduated from Dubuque Senior High School in 1937 and then from Alexian Brothers in St. Louis as a registered nurse in 1942. He served in the US Army as a surgical nurse with the 132nd Evac Hospital from 1942 until 1946.
Bob married, Ida Joan (Allaire), April 3, 1946 and she passed away on Dec. 5, 1979.
He was employed at the Marion Veterans Administration Hospital from 1948 until he retired in 1977. He moved to Borrego Springs, Calif. in Sept. of 1980. During his nearly 30 years in Borrego Springs, Bob served two terms as Honorary Mayor (the first to do so). He was active in the Anza Borrego State Park as a volunteer with over 10,000 hours. He served on the board of directors of the Borrego Springs Chamber of Commerce, Civic Foundation, Borrego Springs Performing Arts Center and the Rotary Club. He was a member of St. Barnabas Episcopal Church and St. Richards Catholic Church.
He is survived by daughter, Kathleen (Pat) Murphy, Kansas City; son, Thomas J. (Angela) Cassidy, Elwood; four grandchildren, Elaine (Fred) Rizzo, Theresa (Kurt) Nuss, Kevin (Dawn) Cassidy, Kyle Cassidy; great-grandchildren, Alex and Sam Rizzo, Hannah, Maggie and Carolyn Nuss, Aidan and Linley Cassidy; sister, Barbara Frommelt, Dubuque, Iowa; brother, Francis Cassidy, Winter Park, Colo.; and several nieces and nephews.
Bob was preceded in death by his parents, wife and two sisters, Helen and Lillian.

BORREGO SPRINGS, Calif. — Former Elwood resident Robert T. Cassidy, 90, of Borrego Springs, Calif., died Nov. 29, 2009, at St. Vincent Mercy Hospital in Elwood.
He served in the U.S. Army.
Survivors include daughter, Kathleen (husband, Pat) Murphy; and son, Thomas J. (wife, Angela) Cassidy.
His wife, Ida Joan (Allaire) Cassidy, died Dec. 5, 1979.
Funeral Mass 10 a.m. Friday at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Elwood. Burial in Garden of Memory Cemetery, Marion.
Visitation 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Dunnichay Funeral Home, Elwood.
