Dorcas Anne Hayes Endris was born on July 11, 1923 to Merle Calvin "Chick" Hayes and Ruth Isabel Brookman Hayes in Hillsboro Hospital. Her parents lived on one of the Montgomery county farms in Butler Township owned by Ruth's grandfather William A. Gray. The young family moved to Decatur where the first of the Hayes Hatcheries was located and which Chick helped to start.
In 1926 the Hayes family moved to Pana where Dorcas's father eventually ran Hayes Hatcheries Leader Chicks, his own business. She graduated from PTHS in 1940 as a National Merit Scholar and went on to Stephens College in Springfield MO for one year before transferring to the University of Illinois where she studied Home Economics and became a member of the Zeta Tau Alpha sorority. On July 17th, 1944 she married her high school sweetheart, Francis Joseph Endris, at St. Patrick's rectory in Pana. After a short honeymoon in St. Louis they went directly to San Barbara, CA where Fran, a U S Marine, was stationed after returning from overseas duty in the Pacific Theater of Operations. It was there that their first child, Francine Ruth, was born on August 26th, 1945.
After Fran was honorably discharged from the Marines in October 1945 the little family moved back to Pana. Their second child, Gaynelle Lynn, was born there on June 19th, 1947. In 1951 they moved into their new house, built primarily by Fran, at 604 E 6th St in Pana. This was where Dorcas spent the rest of her life as a wife and mother. Their last child, Fredric J., was born on February 18, 1952.
In 1963 Dorcas began her teaching career at Sacred Heart School in Pana where she taught the second grade. In the years following she went back to school evenings and summers until she earned a B.S. degree in education from Illinois State University in 1969 and an M.Ed from Greenville College in 1973. She taught in the Pana School District from 1965 until she retired. She died on January 28th, 1999 in her home of almost 50 years after an extended illness.
