Services for Mrs. Jessie Mae Boykin, 91, of Livingston, formerly of Lufkin, will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, July 3, at the Livingston Church of God In Christ.
Mrs. Boykin was born Jan. 30, 1918 in Farwell, La., the second child of the late Rev. J.H. McDonald and Ardie Mae McDonald. Mrs. Boykin graduated with honors from Jack Yates High School in Houston. She received her BA from Texas State University and did her graduate work at Texas Southern University. She married Edward Douglas Boykin on Jan. 31, 1953, in Los Angeles. Mrs. Boykin moved to Lufkin and served faithfully at New Zion Baptist Church for many years as a Sunday School teacher. She was the speaker on numerous occasions in her church and was called upon frequently to speak in the city of Lufkin. She served on the team working with Dr. William Glasser when he wrote his book "Reality Therapy." Dr. Glasser's work is taught in over 26 countries. She has been an elementary school teacher, adult education teacher, counselor dietitian for the Children's Aid Society of New York, home economics teacher, diagnostician, Dean of Women at Bishop College in Dallas and therapist for the California Youth Authority. Mrs. Boykin resided in Lufkin and served her friends with her great seamstress abilities up until about a year ago. She moved to Livingston to be with family in preparation for her heavenly journey home. She is also preceded in death by two brothers, John Henry McDonald, Cleophas McDonald and a sister, Fannie Washington; and husband, Edward Douglas Boykin.
