|Birth: ||Apr. 6, 1844|
Lower Saxony (Niedersachsen), Germany
|Death: ||Oct. 24, 1927|
Ulfert Harms Klaasmeyer was born at Greetsiel, Ostfriesland, Germany, April 6, 1844. His parents were John and Tobina Klaasmeyer. He was baptized and received his spiritual education in the Reformed church at the place of his birth. According to the custom of his church, he was confirmed at the age of twenty.
In 1869 he emigrated to America and came to Basco, Illinois. There he was united in holy wedlock to miss Jantje Dreesen. This union was blessed with five children, of whom two died in early infancy. The living three are John of Burr; Dina wife of Henry Haverkamp of Ormour; and Tobina wife of Henry Wiltfang of Brunswick.
In April of 1879 the young couple with their three little children came to Osage, where they first lived on one of the farms of the Late Louis Damme, about two miles East of the Osage church. In May 1879 the wife died and left the young husband with his motherless children.
To give his children motherly care, Mr. Klaasmeyer was compelled to enter again into wedlock and married Tobina Haverkamp in August of 1879. In 1897 this union was broken by death and since that time he had made his home with his only son John, and his daughter-in-law.
As we see the departedhad to go through many afflictions and tribulations, yet he was able to confess with St. Paul: "Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him: loved us."
In 1879 Ulfert Klaasmeyer joined the Ev. St. Pauls church of Osage and proved himself a true and faithful member. In 1887 and 1888 and again in 1909 and 1910 he served the St. Pauls church as trustee or elder. In 1920 he was elected delegate to the district conference which was held in Lincoln, Nebr.
During the past year his health had failed rapidly, and on Monday, October 24, 1927, at 7:35 a.m. he passed away in peace, having attained the ripe age of eighty three years, six months, and eighteen days.
Those who mourn his death are his son John, his two daughters, Dina and Tobina, one daughter-in-law, Mrs. John Klaasmeyer, two sons-in-law, Henry Haverkamp and Henry Wiltfang; twenty four grand children and fourteen great grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, Otober 26, at 1:30 p.m. interment being in the beautiful Osage cemetery. Many relatives and friends were here, some of them from quite a distance, to attend the services. Our sympathy goes out to the bereaved ones in their time of sorrow.
