Michael Joseph Kalil died March 18, 2004, in Cape Cod Hospital in Hyannis, Massachusetts, at the age of 39 following a lifelong battle to overcome a congenital heart defect.
Michael was born September 4, 1964, to Charles D. (Bud) and Gertrude (Bougie) Kalil in Williston, North Dakota, the youngest of six children. Michael attended schools in Williston until 1981 when he moved to Sandwich, MA, to attend Riverview High School. He graduated from Riverview and went on to obtain an associates degree from Cape Cod Community College.
While living in Williston, Mike worked at Budget Tapes and Records, owned by his brother Dan and sister-in-law Kathy. He also worked on the family farm. Michael was employed at Sears in Hyannis for 8 years, and later worked as a teacher's aide in elementary schools on Cape Cod for several years. Michael was active in children's sports programs on Cape Cod as a coach, scorekeeper and official. He also was a lector at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in West Harwich.
Throughout his life and its countless surgeries and hospitalizations, Michael was a brave fighter who constantly amazed his doctors with his strong will to live and his many medical triumphs over a defective heart. His weakened heart was a big heart, especially for children. Mike took great pride in his many nieces and nephews and their accomplishments. He always looked forward to the annual family reunion every summer in Minnesota. Mike loved baseball and football, especially cheering for the Boston teams. One of his fondest memories was of a trip to Cooperstown to visit the Baseball Hall of Fame with a group of young players he was coaching. He also enjoyed playing golf, especially with his dad, brothers and nephews.
Michael is survived by his father and stepmother, Charles (Bud) and Gloria Kalil, Sun Lakes, AZ; mother, Gertrude Kalil, Bemidji, MN; and three sisters and two brothers: Terry, (Detroit Lakes, MN); Patty and Joe Margarit (Bloomington, MN) and their children, Ted, Betsy and Charlie; David and Candy Kalil (Rapid City, SD) and their children Chad, Melissa (Jesse) Anderson, Kevin and Tim; Dan and Kathy Kalil (Williston, ND) and their children Billy, Thomas, Alex and Ian; and Laurie and David Metzger (Charlotte, NC) and their children Matthew and Katie.
He is also survived by a great-nephew, Jay K. Anderson, born March 6, 2004. Michael is also survived by his aunts and uncles: Helen Kalil (Williston, ND), Sadie Zine (Sacramento, CA), Leona and Frank Lukenbill (Sacramento, CA), Celia Forzley (Great Falls, MT), Jack and Lib Knudson (Sun Lakes, AZ) and Mary Jo and Ed Datko (St. Paul, MN).
