Son of Stephen Jr. and Frances (Brown) Gardner, born 1771 in New London, Connecticut. Jesse's parents were at Wintermute Fort, on 3 July 1778, during the Battle of Wyoming Valley and some evidence suggests that the young Jesse was with them, but they returned to Connecticut soon after. He permanently moved to Pennsylvania in 1785 when he settled near Providence township (now part of Scranton.), Luzerne County (now Lackawanna.) About 1795, he married Christianna Simrell and they had eleven children. Although it was thought that Jesse moved to Greenfield, Luzerne (now Lackawanna), Pennsylvania about 1800; the 1800 and 1810 census has him in Providence Township. From at least 1820 til his death, Jesse resided in Greenfield and died 3 July 1840. After his death, his widow married his brother Benjamin Gardner.
