JOHN PHILIP JOHNSON, son of Philip and Elizabeth Johnson, was born in Virginia on October 19, 1780. He was twice married -- first to Martha Elam, to whom were born two children, Mary Elizabeth and Philip Henry and perhaps others.
On his 40th birthday, October 19, 1820, in Lawrence County, Alabama, he married his second wife, Mary Harral, daughter of Harmon and Rachel 'Brown' Harral. Mary Harral was born in North Carolina on January 1, 1797. To this union were born eight children. Sometime after the birth of their third child they left Lawrence County, Alabama and moved to Weakley County, Tennessee, near the community of Jonesboro where they settled and built a home on property that is still known today as "Johnson Hill."
The children and spouses of John and Mary were: William Brown, (Sarah Grooms); Harmon C., (1st, Mary Frances Ward, 2nd, Hawkins Finch); Elizabeth Ann, (James Crabtree); Susan Jane, (1st, Edwin Franklin Quinn, 2nd, William "Buck" E. Spear); Mary Clay Nancy Alabama, (John Harvey Pounds); Rachel Clementine, (Moses Gideon Perry); John Philip, (Eliza Jane Reddick); and Elijah W., (Mary Ann Grissom).
