Civic leader. He was a prominent citizen of Southington for many years. A 1931 graduate of Dartmouth College, he was a member of the Board of Water Commissioners and served as the town's third selectman from 1948 to 1949 and was the town's representative in the General Assembly from 1952 to 1954 and 1956 to 1958. He was a member of several state committees, including the Civil Defense Advisory Board and the Undercliff Mental Health Advisory Council. A past president of the Greater Southington Chamber of Commerce, he was a member of the Exchange Club, the Elks Club and the Southington Republican Town Committee. He owned and operated Curtiss Greenhouses until his retirement in 1976. As a seventh-generation member of the founding family, Mr. Curtiss was chosen to light the Bicentennial torch during the town's 200th anniversary celebration in 1979. He died at his summer home on Block Island.
