Birth: Feb. 26, 1985
Bellville
Austin County
Texas, USA
Death: May 5, 2007
Baghdad, Iraq

Army Pfc. Guyton was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 5th Cavalry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division, Fort Hood, Texas. Guyton died in Balad of wounds sustained when an improvised explosive device detonated near his vehicle during combat operations. Larry went to school in Brenham until his sophomore year and transferred to Bellville High School. He was a member of the JROTC and Buffalo Soldiers and graduated in May 2004. He felt strongly about joining the military because he wanted to change negative stereotypes about young black men he wanted to do something positive with his life. On June 3, 2005, he joined the U.S. Army, fulfilling his longtime dream. He married his long time girlfriend, Tonya, and had two sons. In October 2006, he was deployed to Iraq. His military awards and decorations include the National Defense Service Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Army Service Medal, Overseas Service Medal and Expert Weapons Qualification Badge. Larry's family regularly gathered to make care packages for him and sent enough so he could share with all his friends. In February, he was able to come home for a visit and expected to return for good in August. Larry enjoyed camping, fishing and hunting. He also loved to wear cowboy boots and spurs. When faced with the prospect of being killed in Iraq, he said he understood that. But he wanted to do something that would help others and he thought serving his country would help make the world a better place. He would want others to remember it's not how he died, but how he lived.
