Livingstone was a great explorer and missionary, with expeditions of the Zambezi, the discovery of the Victoria Falls and the first European to cross the African continent from coast to coast to his credit. His search for the sources of the Nile and Congo rivers occupied him to the point of obsession for several years. He is also famous for the "Doctor Livingstone, I presume?" incident along with fellow explorer Henry Morton Stanley. Stanley was sent to find Livingstone by the New York Herald proprietor James Gordon Bennett.
