Susan Telia Stevens, the daughter of Joseph Freeman Stevens and Laura Cornelia Lovelace, was born and raised in Clarksville, Red River County, Texas.
She married John Arthur Eaves there on October 20, 1907. She and Arthur moved first to Lorenzo, Crosby County, Texas and bought a farm. In 1929, they moved to Petersburg, Hale County, Texas, and established a grocery store which was later expanded to include a hardware and general merchandise store. In 1949, John Arthur retired due to poor health and the store was turned over to his sons Floyd and Howard. John and Susan then moved to Lubbock, Texas. Susan got a job in the cafeteria at West Texas Hospital and continued working there until 1963.
Two of their seven children died in infancy. Their other five children were Loyd Howard (Lytle), Floyd Arthur (Mildred), Billie Sue Hughes (Truett), Pansy Rae Burtis (Thomas Ray) and Joseph Neil Eaves. Pansy Rae is their only living child and there are nine living grandchildren and many great-grandchildren.
Susan Telia was a very smart, strong, independent lady who worked well into her elder years. She was a talented seamstress and she also skillfully crafted many knitted and crocheted treasures. She survived several bouts with cancer and many broken bones, including both hips, and lived to the amazing age of 103 years.
