John Arthur Eaves was the son of John Howard Eaves and Callie Walker, who came to Red River County from Pontotoc County, Mississippi. Arthur was born and raised in Clarksville, Red River County, Texas. He married Susan Telia Stevens there on October 20, 1907 and they later moved to Lorenzo, Crosby County, Texas and bought a farm. In 1929, they moved to Petersburg, Texas, where they established a grocery store. The store was later expanded to include a hardware and general merchandise store.
In 1949, John Arthur retired due to poor health and the store was turned over to his sons Floyd and Howard. John and Susan then moved to Lubbock, Texas. Susan got a job in the cafeteria at Lubbock Memorial Hospital and continued working there until 1960.
Two of their seven children died in infancy. The other five children were Loyd Howard, Floyd Arthur, Billie Sue, Pansy Rae and Joseph Neil. Pansy Rae Burtis (Thomas Ray) is their only living child and there are nine living grandchildren and many great-grandchildren.
John Arthur will always be remembered for his kind and gentle ways and his fun-loving personality. He enjoyed gardening. especially vegetable gardening. John loved to sing and whistle and his favorite song was "Mockingbird Hill."
