The B-24 "Tail Wind" from the 789th BG, 467th BG out of Rackheath, UK was lost on 11 July 1944 returning from a raid on Munich. It was heavily damaged by flak, but had gotten as to the airspace over Calais France when it was attacked by an enemy fighter. Pilot 1Lt James Underwood, Copilot 2Lt Thornton Gillett and Engineer SSgt Edward Zielinski maintained control of the aircraft as the remainder of the crew bailed out, but all three were killed in the ultimate crash of the plane.
