At one time, Tipton was a harness maker and also was considered one of the best wooden bowl makers around. He was injured badly when he was young and had to have one leg amputated.
He owned substantial land in the Portland area along the Ohio River in Louisville, Kentucky. The land was very fertile and he was successful as a vegetable farmer there and marketed them in the area. He was well known for his cabbage patch.
The marriage of Tipton and Sarah Morrison lasted over 70 years, and they were recognized by receiving a letter of congratulations by President Roosevelt.
